Types of Drive Shafts

There are four. Most common of them is front-wheel drive, which uses the front wheels to move your vehicle. In this system all of the parts are located at the front, and constant velocity (CV) joints connect the drivetrain to a differential. Rear-wheel drive, on the other hand, powers the vehicle through the back wheels. That requires the drive shaft to connect with the transmission and differential with universal joints, or U-joints.

The last two types are four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and they feature very similar structures. Since every wheel is involved with moving your vehicle, there are two drive shafts. One is up front, where it connects to a front differential and a transfer case using U-joints. The one at the rear is like that used in a rear-wheel drive vehicle.
